How to sign a PDF without printing it
Updated November 4, 2026 · 4 min read
Printing a document, signing it with a pen and scanning it back takes ten minutes and produces a blurry, oversized file. Signing digitally takes under a minute and looks cleaner.
Step by step
- Open the PDF in PDFHeron’s Sign PDF tool. It works in any modern browser on a computer, tablet or phone, and nothing is uploaded.
- Create your signature in one of three ways:
- Draw it with a mouse, trackpad, finger or stylus.
- Type your name and choose a handwriting-style font.
- Upload a photo of your signature on white paper. The white background is removed automatically.
- Place it on the signature line, then drag the corner to resize it.
- Add the date. Open Stamps & form marks and click Date, or type it with the Text tool.
- Save and send the signed PDF.
Tips for a professional result
- Tick “Save this signature” to reuse it next time with one click. It is stored only in your browser.
- Make a second, smaller signature for initials on each page.
- Use dark blue or black ink. Blue makes it obvious the signature was added rather than photocopied.
- Fill in the rest of the form first with the form-filling tools, then sign last.
Is an image signature legally valid?
In many countries, including the US (ESIGN Act) and the EU (eIDAS, which recognizes “simple electronic signatures”), an electronic signature can be legally valid for everyday agreements when the parties intend to sign. Some documents, such as certain government filings, wills or notarized papers, have stricter rules or require a certificate-based digital signature, which PDFHeron does not create. When in doubt, ask the recipient what they accept. This is general information, not legal advice.
